‘The Master Physician and The Divine Art of Healing’

I greet all of you, my dear brothers and sisters, with the greeting words of “peace.” We say it in Hebrew, “Shalom,” in Arabic, “As-Salaam Alaikum,” in English, “Peace be unto you.

Doctors must be involved in the divine art of healing

Dear brothers and sisters, it’s a great honor to talk to those of you whom I believe God has called to the healing science and the healing art. To be a doctor, to be a healer, is one of the greatest professions of this world.

I said, “called by God,” because every person involved in healing, to me, is involved in that which is of divine. As doctors, you are students of the greatest house, divine house, that God created: the human body. And as students of His magnificent creation, the human body, there are certain norms that you know must be present in order for the body to be considered healthy. There are certain standards and there are certain criteria that all agree are the measurement of health. And so, when you take blood pressure, you don’t ask color or race; you know that if it is within a certain range, the life force is, in that area, functioning properly. If the temperature of the body is within a certain range, you know it is healthy. If the pulse beat of a heart rate is in a certain range, you can tell the vital signs are good. And whenever these signs are not as they should be, the natural function of this wonderful organism is being impaired; therefore, as a doctor, you make a proper diagnosis, and then you prescribe some medication that will bring a natural function that is out of order back to divine order, and then the patient thanks the doctor because the patient becomes well.

As a doctor, you are knowledgeable of the science of medicine, but there is also the art (the skill of execution of your knowledge). The greater your creativity in exercising that knowledge, then you become a skilled artist at your craft. So, you’re not only involved in the science of medicine, you are involved in the art of healing.

The Criterion for measuring spiritual, mental health

This world, however, is a world that has been more physical than spiritual, and it has not yet learned how to link the spiritual with the physical. So, as you become a scientist, and skilled at healing the physical, what is the standard by which you measure the health of the person spiritually, morally and mentally? Now, you know the criterion for the physical body, but what is the criterion for the spiritual, the mental? That is not taught. But the criterion is what God Himself has laid down for the healthy human being.

In the Book of Genesis, Chapter 5, God says He created male and female, called their name “Adam.” As He created the human being, He gave them commands (Genesis, Ch. 1): “Multiply,” “replenish the earth,” “subdue it.”

“Multiplication” is not just on the physical level of procreation, but “multiplication” is taking a multiplicand times a multiplier and producing a product. If man and woman are not productive, meaning taking what God has already given you, multiplying it by the wisdom that is in the universe that creates vision, and then bringing that vision into reality as a producer, then you are not healthy here [your mind] if you’re non-productive. You are not healthy mentally and spiritually if you have not subdued the earth [your physical body], meaning brought the laws of the earth that control and govern matter under your control—and that starts by the manifestation of your power to control yourself!

Now, “doc”: If you are a healer and yet lack the ability to master your own house that is from the earth, then even though you know the science of the physical body and how to heal that, unless you can link the healing of the spirit and the soul and the mind with the body, then you still have a people that are not made whole.

And if you look at the Black community, I ask you, “What are the vital signs tell you, as a doctor, about the health of our community?” Not only the health in terms of disease, but the health in terms of our productivity, our ability to master ourselves. It is almost non-existent.

So while you heal on one side, if no healing takes place on the other side, you are spinning your wheels! Because a country as great as America, which is no doubt the greatest country on Earth; she has the most hospitals, the best doctors—but she has the most insane people… She has the most insanity, and the most drug use of any country on Earth; and many of our doctors are slaves to drugs, and yet are calling themselves “healers” when they stand in need of being healed themselves.

***

My dear family, listen: Our community is sick, and our community is dying. Yes, we need all the healthcare professionals that we can get, but we also need to heal our people at another level. Now, many of you go to church, and you know that there is a scripture in the Bible that teaches, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

As a doctor, your job is to hold off the inevitable—and “death” is inevitable. But as a doctor, you are to slow down man’s rush into the grave, including your own! And unfortunately, the doctors and their patients live about the same length of time, so, “doc,” somebody needs to come and slow you down from rushing into the grave. Because, your people need you now more than ever, and the knowledge that you have learned from your rich experience is not going to serve us in the grave. Our people are in need of healing, and we have to understand that sin, transgression of law, brings consequence on the moral, mental and spiritual level, and it also begins to curtail the creative, artistic ability of the individual.

So, if you’re going to make people healthy, you have to make them right. And there’s a right way to live, and there’s a right way to handle this magnificent house. And when you eat wrong, when you live wrong, then you produce results that bring about disease and lack of proper health.

The Master Physician with ‘healing in his wings’ (knowledge of self)

The scriptures of the Bible teach that “a physician” is needed for our people. (Jeremiah 8:22 – “Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?”) If you study the scriptures, you can say Jesus was a great prophet, you can say he was “Messiah,” but in reality, he was a healer! He was a master physician: He took blind people, made them see; deaf people, made them hear; lame people, made them walk; and dead people, made them rise!

Now, of course we can debate the theological esoteric meaning of that, but this is not the time nor the place. But my purpose is that the greatest human being that God made for the world was a healer! And if we are spiritual people, tied to Christ, or tied to Jesus, or tied to any of the prophets, we, also, are involved in the business of healing.

No doubt our people are sick. So, if we are sick, we need a doctor. The doctor must have the ability to diagnose and prescribe the right medicine to make our people whole. There’s a [popular hymn (“Balm in Gilead”) whose lyrics state]: “There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.”

If America is “Gilead,” where is the balm that will make the wounded Black man whole? Where is the balm that will heal a sin-sick soul? Even in this august body we are troubled by spiritual disease that we may not wish to address: envy, jealousy, greed; the desire for material things over your ability to serve a community that needs you. These are spiritual diseases that Harvard does not address, Yale does not address, and ofttimes, the church does not adequately address it. So even though we are healers, yet we are sick, and we need a doctor—so this is where prophets and messengers of God come in. They are not your enemy! They are your companions in the art and the science of healing. As a Muslim, I don’t see myself as not a part of the NMA. I am your brother in the science and the art of healing, but I am working on it from a different level.

Beloved brothers and sisters, in the Bible, The Old Testament ends: “Behold! I will send you Elijah.” That name “Elijah” is a powerful name. You know what it means? It means “doctor,” it means “medicine,” it means “the cure,” it means “the sum,” “the total,” “the answer.” “Eli” means “My God ‘Jah’/‘Jehovah’.” So, it’s the Presence of God as a Healer for the people. The scripture teaches when he came, he would have “healing in his wings.”

Well, you know man doesn’t have wings. But when you open a book, an open book looks like a bird with wings. It is knowledge that heals. The scripture teaches, “My people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6) So what the Honorable Elijah Muhammad did, brothers and sisters: Most of us never understood him, but he understood that we needed healing. First, we needed something done (mentally) about our hatred of self.

If you’re a Black man, you can’t change that. … You cannot escape what God made you, why be ashamed of who you are and what you are? Because God, Who created you, made you unique and marvelous. But if you don’t love yourself, then you can’t really be trusted to love anyone else. … As a doctor, if you don’t love yourself, you won’t serve yourself, so you begin to look at your patient as something to bring you money, but not something that you should serve as part of a community that is dying.

We need to be restructured here (the mind). We need to be healed from the disease of white supremacy. We need to be healed from the disease of black inferiority. We need to be healed of the disease of self-hatred. And we need to be healed of a disease; that our thinking is so destructive of self, that Jesus said, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he.” Those who have controlled and manipulated our patterns of thought have made us unwholesome and unhealthy. And so here we are, in 1996, four years from the close of this century, with a very sick community physically; but a community that is sick physically because we are absolutely sick mentally, morally and spiritually.

***

So I am hoping that as you, the NMA, helped Dr. Alim Muhammad with the alpha interferon, to put it before the National Institute of Health, to get clinical trials; and as your president, and others, worked with us with the Million Man March, and you saw, in one day, really, a healing take place: Two million sick people on The Mall, and in one day there was some medicine administered, and people cried that hadn’t cried in a long time, embraced each other in the spirit of genuine love. And even those who watched by television were affected by what was going on in The Mall. It was a national and international healing that dealt with atonement (“at one”).

This (the body) is a unified structure that is only successful when it operates in unity, starting with sperm mixed with ovum, producing one cell then dividing and multiplying, producing billions of cells, nine systems governed by the brain. And if there is no light in the mind, then these systems are still not working as well as they should. Because the 10th System, The Brain, is like the sun and the nine planets: Without the sun, the nine planets would collide—and without light (knowledge) in the brain, we do things that bring about dis-ease.

So since everything is created to work in unity, then “at one,” or “a-tone-ment” means that we have to bring our lives into oneness with our Creator. That’s No. 1! Doctors, don’t think that religion is not science. False religion is “hocus pocus” stuff, but real religion is the mother of science because it’s based in mathematics. And if you are grounded in mathematics and grounded in science, then you must know that there is a God, and you must link your life to the life of The Creator. And when you become one with Him, then you are linked to the source of light and life and energy, and power and truth, then you become a real healer that is not only healing the physical, but you have the artistry, the creative genius to work with science in a magnificent way to produce healing all the way from the spiritual to the physical.

And so, The Qur’an, in my conclusion, one of its titles is Al-Shifa (“The Healing”). It is a Book that is medicine, but it must be in the hands of a good doctor.

Make the ‘business of medicine’ righteous in practice

I would hope that in the coming days as we begin to reflect on the condition of our people, and how the country is moving, and how black doctors are gradually being moved out in these HMOs that are being formed, we have to fight back intelligently. Because if you are killed as a healer, in terms of your ability to perform, they take you out by not pulling you into these HMOs. Is that right?

And as you know, most of you are in debt. There’s no question about that… If you can’t make a dollar, you can’t pay your debts. Your insurance is a killer! And so, doctors, we can’t allow you to suffer; because if you go, we are gone! We don’t want to be at the mercy of those “healers” who don’t love us, who don’t care for us.

I hope you will discuss health management plans; and not only discuss it, but let’s work together, us and you! I mean, if we could take every member of every congregation and put them in an HMO, and pull you into that, then before long, not only millions, but billions of dollars will come back into our community. And look at what we could do! Meharry Medical College should not suffer! Howard University Medical School should not suffer! But our medical institutions are suffering, and there are people that hope they will close so that our people would be totally dependent again on their former slave masters. We cannot let that happen!

In the ’60s, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad told us, “Don’t take the polio vaccine.” Later, we learned that the people that were getting vaccinated for polio were getting a polio contaminant called “SV40,” which was a contributor to cancer. Now look, you are scientists, but you don’t know what’s in that vial that you’re shooting in peoples’ arms!

I asked the doctor one day, “Doc, what is that?” And he’s my friend… I mean, you know, he is my brother, and he loves me, he doesn’t want to hurt me; but I asked him, “What’s in that?!” He said, “Well, what’s on the label, you know…” I said, “But how do you know that what’s on the label is in that bottle?” He said, “I don’t know!” That means we are at the mercy of pharmaceutical people that may not have our interests at heart—and history has proved that we should not trust what’s in the bottle! So, if we have our own HMOs, and have that kind of money, then we can set up our own pharmaceutical plants and develop our own inoculations so that we can give our babies something that we know is what’s in that vial.

We have to be business-minded; we’ve got to be spiritual-minded, and we have to understand that there are those who are frightened over the multiplication of black people. And they are frightened that by the Year 2050, if we continue at our birthrate, and they continue at theirs, we will either be equal to them or superior to them in population. And though many of us won’t be here by the Year 2053, but your grandchildren will be here, and that means that your grandchildren will be in a position politically to take over the country—and a racist is planning now to rob your grandchildren and mine of that that our own population regeneration and multiplication will cause to come to us.
